Autumn in France is colorful. No crowds, friendly people,
beautiful countryside, interesting villages, magnificent cuisine and wondrous
cities. Explore Lyon, immediately notice the slower, easier way of life, similar
to our southern cities. This ancient historic city bisected by the rivers Rhone
and Saone gives emphasis to its churches, museums, culture and of course
its gastronomical fame. Explore Provence. This southeastern region
of France continues the easier laidback lifestyle. With a rental car you
can easily explore the cities of Les Baux, St. Remy, Arles, the Camargue,
Aix-En- Provence, Marseille, Nice, St. Tropez, Cannes and so many more.
Each city and region has it's own delights. Don't forget
Paris, "the magical city of light."
John & Kris, Spring 2003 in France
Adventure. We completed our May 6 to May 21, 2003 adventure in La Belle
France in fantastic style. We began in magical Paris with a day (45
minutes) train trip to Fontainebleau and its opulent Castle. Fontainebleau is a
beautiful city with so much to offer Louis IV sure new how to live. For a few days of exciting sightseeing, eating,
savoring fine wine, shopping, enjoying the fragrances of the "city of
lights" and especially the colorful people. After three days in
Paris we boarded our train from Montparnnase train station to the Dordogne
region by way of Bordeaux, St. Jean train station. We collected our luxury
Renault and drove 2 1/2 hours through gorgeous countryside, villages, rivers,
farms and vineyards. Reaching Sarlat La Caneda our seven day base in the
Dordogne region. This 1,000 year old medieval city is totally charming
with quaint shops, restaurants, parks, ramparts, churches and indescribable
views. Seven days of sailing down rivers, exploring caverns, ancient
villages, limestone cliffs, limestone forts, hilltop castles, cliff top gardens,
Roman ruins and Cro-Magnon sites. Did I mention food? Duck, lamb, pork,
walnuts, wine, French desserts and friendly people. We had seven days of
sunshine. We returned to Paris
for four days of touring and serious shopping. Remember as visitors and
tourists we are allowed A VAT tax break on purchases if you spend at least
$170.00 USD in one store. We are now allowed $800.00 per person duty
free. Hooray for tourism! We plan to return to France next May
2004 for more great fun.
John
& Kris cruise Bermuda & Philadelphia. Sept. 29 to Oct. 7,
2003. We planned to vacation at Disney World, Orlando Florida; but we quickly
changed our minds due to the exorbitant cost and the huge crowds during holiday
seasons. For a fraction of the cost we cruised for 6 nights in and
around Bermuda and toured 3 days in Philadelphia. Our good ship the
"Norwegian Sea" left the Philadelphia dock and quickly headed to
the open sea. We had a great time touring historic Philadelphia where so much
history was created by our forefathers: The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall,
Congress Hall, Carpenters Hall, Ben Franklins Post Office and the Philly
Sandwich. Hooray for the Red, White and
Blue.
John & Kris in London, England.
Dec. 26, 2003 to Jan. 2, 2004. We spent a wonderful week in and around
London to celebrate New Years in a new modern yet ancient city with all its
glory. We took the train to visit Hampton Court Palace for a full day. We
visited this gorgeous castle spread over many acres of wooded land that
includes: Henry's Apartments, Tudor Kitchens, the Kings Apartments, the Queen's
State Apartments, The Georgian Rooms, Maze, lakes and Gardens. Old Hank really
lived well not to mention his wives. We rode the train to Stratford Upon Avon
the birthplace of William Shakespeare. A lovely town. We enjoyed his children's
homes, the Nash's House & New Place, Hall's Croft and so much more. Growing
late we dined at the Edward Moon English Brasseries, very nice. We strolled back
to the train station to catch the last train of the night to London. We were
also the only passengers on the train. The next day we tangled with hugh crowds,
ate and shopped at Harrod's. That night we attended "Anything goes"
the old Cole Porter musical at the Royal Drury Lane theater the oldest in
London. Great play! Next few days we enjoyed the museums, the Thames,
dining, sights and the people. We spent New Year's eve walking around Trafalgar
Square with the lights, billboards, double Decker busses and the preparation for
the New Year's celebration. It became very cold so we retreated to our Royal
Lancaster Hotel for the African New Years Eve Party theme in the Pavement Cafe.
We enjoyed Disco
dancing, eating, champagne and a light show. A super celebration. I
miss my old leisure suit. New Year's Day no American Football games in
England. So we toured the Tate Modern Museum. Reminded me so much of Art 101 in
College. January 2, 2004 all packed and ready to go to Heathrow airport and
return home.
