Old Cat and I

 OLD CAT AND I
by
John A. Vara

Old cat, I stroked you, held you, loved you.
Our time together was it enough.

Why did you leave me.

I was faithful and true.
I filled your dish, water fresh,
cleaned your box, was it enough.

Why did you leave me.

Danger lurks, Prowl the night, never!
Our home was comfortable
and safe was it enough.

Why did you leave me.

The couch kept your claws sharp.
We watched TV was it enough.

Why did you leave me.

Your staccato purr was annoying,
You drooled enough.

Why did you leave me.

The Vet visits were for you,
Your medicines, injections,
I gave you, was it enough.

Why did you leave me.

The warm sun measured the time of day,
As you moved from room to room.
You slept enough.

Why did you leave me.

My flight was late. Was it hard to wait.
You were cold.

Why did you leave me.

Old cat, twenty and one was it enough,

Why did you leave me.
